Motorola MP6000 Multi Plane Scanner

2011-2012

OVERVIEW

The MP6000 is a high-performance, multi-plane bioptic imager designed for high-volume retail environments like supermarkets, and is able to scan all 6 sides of a product. The industrial design features two large scan windows, a capacitive touch interface, a front-facing speaker and an optional customer-facing side scanner for loyalty cards and coupon scanning.

BRIEF

The MP6000 was entering into a very well established and mature ecosystem. A Multi-Plane checkout scanner must fit within a set size to fit installations world-wide, and training customers on using new systems is generally unpopular. This created a tight constraint on design opportunities.

The focus was therefore on easing the installation as much as possible, creating multiple flexible configurations and supporting integrated accessory designs, all while pushing for higher performance.

Since thousands of items are scanned every day, even minor flaws can build to a large problem. Tiny details measuring less than 3 mm—such as the transition from the sapphire crystal to the edge of the scanning surface—were meticulously refined; any imperfections in the design could have led to increased wear on the glass.
